Summary
When a green ogre named Shrek discovers his swamp has been bombarded with all sorts of fairytale creatures by the scheming Lord Farquaad, Shrek sets out with a very loud donkey by his side to 'persuade' Farquaad to give Shrek his swamp back. Instead, a deal is made. Farquaad, who wants to become the King, sends Shrek to rescue Princess Fiona, who is awaiting her true love in a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. But once they head back with Fiona, it starts to become apparent that not only does Shrek, an ugly ogre, begin to fall in love with the lovely princess, but Fiona is also hiding a huge secret.
Thoughts
Today is an absolutely lovely day filled with sunshine, clear skies, and warm summer-temperatures! Nevertheless, I wanted to share my thoughts on the humourous film Shrek from 2001; one my personal favourite animated films of all time.
There are several puns about fairy tale characters hidden within this animated masterpiece which shape the film's base of humour. Shrek is like a magical concoction of all of your favourite fairy tales, all jumbled up together, and made into a whole new fairy tale about Shrek's exciting adventures with his strange new companions. I love the creativity each Shrek film brings into the world and how these films show the audience new adventures along with funny new characters in each film. This is an excellent family movie and it teaches younger audiences valuable lessons as well.

Lessons Learned from Shrek...
I think we can all agree that Shrek is one of the greatest animated movies of all time, and it has taught us several valuable life lessons as well; and for that, Shrek, we are forever indebted to you!
1. Don't Judge a Book By It's Cover
To begin with, the first and most valuable life lesson Shrek has taught us is to embrace who we are, ignore the haters, and don't judge a books by its cover. Yes, this is the most obvious lesson from Shrek, but it’s the most valuable lesson in my opinion. The people of the Kingdom of Far Far Away often assume that Shrek is a violent, human-devouring creature even though he's really quite kind. The civilians of Far Far Away scream and run if he so much as wiggles his little finger. Similarly, Shrek writes Fiona off because she looks like your average, boring, and superficial princess. However, she and Shrek have a lot in common (not only in their ogre appearances, but in their personalities as well).
2. Ogres are Like Onions
The quote you see above is one of the most well-known life lessons from Shrek. This quote has often been known to confuse people, so right now, I will explain it to you! In this quote, Shrek is referring to how he isn't superficial and that he has feelings too. My understanding of layer in this context is that Shrek was trying to tell Donkey not to stereotype people in that you can't judge people according the way they look. No one enjoys being stereotyped. Once you’re put in a box, it can be hard to convince people that you are more than what they’ve assumed. The truth is, we're all comprised of infinite possibilities and immense complexities.
3. Everyone Deserves a Happy Ending
Last but not least, Shrek teaches people that everyone deserves a happy ending no matter how you look. We should all spend less time trying to be the "perfect" person, and spend more time on our own happiness and uniqueness. Everyone is different, I mean, you don't have to be prince charming with a size two princess to have a happily ever after. Everyone deserves a happy ending!
