Summary
Monsters, Inc. is a factory which sends monsters around the world to scare kids who are trying to sleep. It's nothing personal, in fact the screams are used to power Monstropolis; the world where the monsters live. This job isn't easy for the monsters, who believe children are toxic. The film centres around two monsters employed at Monsters Inc. — top scarer James P. "Sulley" Sullivan, a big intimidating furry monster with big purple spots and horns, and his bright green, one-eyed partner Mike Wazowski. One day at the corporation, Mike and Sulley's lives are turned upside down when Sulley accidentally lets a little girl, whom he later nicknames "Boo", roam into the monster world. Sulley and Mike must return "Boo" to the human world without letting anyone in the corporation know of her existence. With the Child Detection Agency (CDA) hot on their trail, they must do everything they can to hide her. To make matters worse, Sully develops an attachment to the child.
Theories for Thought
- When Boo wondered into the monster world (also refered to as "Monstropolis" in the film) she spent a whole night at Sully and Mike's place meaning that she was not in the human world for about twenty-four hours (since when she returned to the human world, it was night, as well as it being night in the Monstropolis as well). This leads me to question if her parents were looking for her back in the human world? Or does time run differently in Monstropolis? This was never explained in the film and left the viewers to come up with a conclusion or theory of their own.
- My theory is that Boo's parents did infact look for her, but they must have been elsewhere before she got back. I mean, think about it, if you were a parent and your child was missing you likely wouldn't wait in your child's bedroom all day. Likewise, you'd go to the police station, or ask neighbours if they've seen your child. Ultimately, you'd try to find your child! So, about the time difference, I believe there's not enough evidence in the film to state whether or not there's time difference. However, Sully and Mike were exiled to the human world at some point in the film where they met the "Abominable Snowman" and there seemed to be no time difference once they got back to Monstropolis.
Extras
I just wanted to add in that when I first saw this film when I was younger, I absolutely loved this movie! Sully's big heart completely changed my view of "the monsters hiding in my closet". It's a bit funny to think that Pixar would make a film about this aspect of a child's mind. Fear of a big fuzzy monster. Anyway, I just adore the adventures that Mike, Sulley and Boo go through. The whole idea of opening doors only to enter other worlds is a metaphor in itself, but it's quite a creative idea for the film. Overall, the settings, characters, and humour in the film Monsters Inc. left me with a refreshing feeling of adventure and love. But all in all, I definitely recommend that you watch this film if you haven't already!
